These photos are places in Japanese traditional house. First photo is a gate. Japanese traditional gate does not have a door knob. It is opened from left to right. Second photo is an entrance. It is called genkan in japanese. The entrance is a place where people take off their shoes. When the guest takes off his shoes in the entrance, he should turn his shoes to outside. It is an act of courtesy. There are some acts of courtesy in Japanese gate and entrance that we should know. If you do not know them, you might feel humiliated.

I like that you are attempting to introduce various aspects of (your) Japanese culture to foreigners. But you should consider doing it on a deeper level. Genkan and the removal of shoes are basics that foreigners learn about before they come to Japan (I think).
